Celebration Assembly
Gold Book
Our special Gold Book celebrates children’s effort, attitude or behaviour. Children whose names are to be entered into the Gold Book are sent to the headteacher and receive an invitation for a family member to attend celebration assembly. During this assembly, they also receive a special certificate and gold headteacher’s sticker. Their name and the reason for celebrating is recorded in the Gold Book which is on display in the entrance hall.
Best Work
Our best work award celebrates each child’s personal best achievements. Children can be rewarded for individual pieces of work or as a class or group. Children who are to receive a best work award are sent to the headteacher with their work and receive an invitation for a family member to attend celebration assembly. During this assembly, they also receive a special certificate and gold headteacher’s sticker. Their work is then displayed for the coming week in the entrance hall.
Reading and spelling all the tricky words
Once children have learnt to read every set of tricky words and are ready to move on to spellings, a member of their family is invited to celebration assembly where they receive a special certificate. When they have learnt to spell every set of these words, they again receive a special certificate and an invitation.
Termly Gold Certificates and Special Recognition Awards
Each term we hold a special awards assembly to recognise children who have achieved their best. We celebrate the term’s “Golden Children” who have been chosen because they are kind, helpful, hardworking, willing to try new things, truthful, trustworthy, sensible, responsible and because they try their best and keep the Golden Rules. These criteria have been suggested by the children during their class council session and agreed by the school council. Each term staff can nominate children for the Gold Award, as can their classmates, but they need to have a good reason to justify their choice! In addition to this, we celebrate special recognition. The class teacher will identify anyone deserving of special recognition for an achievement individual to them. Both our children receiving a Gold Award and children awarded special recognition will receive a certificate in that term’s final celebration assembly. A family member will again be invited to this special occasion.
Achievements and awards outside school
Many children are involved in clubs, hobbies and associations. As a school we aim to encourage and celebrate these individual talents and achievements and are happy for your child to bring any award into school where we will present it and celebrate together in celebration assembly.
Birthdays
As part of our weekly celebration assembly we celebrate each child’s birthday. Birthday weeks run from Monday to Sunday (inclusive) and family members are welcome to attend. Children stand at the birthday table where they are sung the birthday song and receive a special clap, birthday sticker and a card. They also get to blow out the birthday candle!
Other Celebrations
Roll of Honour
Each year, the names of our year two leavers are entered onto the final edition of the school newsletter in a special annual roll of honour. This is displayed in the entrance hall for the coming year.
Topic Champions
At the end of each topic, children who have tried their best and worked really hard with a topic will receive the award of topic champion. Again the number of children achieving this award is not limited, but by it’s nature, the award will be given to a select number of children who have excelled in achievement or effort during the duration of the topic. In general, there are at least two topics per half term and so there are plenty of opportunities for each child to succeed. We aim to make our topics as varied and interesting as possible to capture the interest and imagination of all children.
Star of the Day
Each class has two special star of the day badges that chosen children wear for the day. Children can be chosen as star of the day for all sorts of reasons including good work, effort, behaviour and attitude. At the end of the day, the child returns the badge and is given a special “Star of the Day” certificate to take home.
Magic Moments
Every day in school lots of magic moments are created or experienced by your child. It can range from tying shoelaces for the first time to helping a friend in the playground; in fact anything that creates that sense of awe and wonder. Your child’s most memorable magic moment will be shared with you on your child’s annual Record of Achievement.
Red Letter Days
Red Letter celebrations work in a similar way to Gold Book by rewarding special achievements, attitudes and behaviours. A red letter is written by the headteacher to the child and sent by Royal Mail to the child’s home address. A copy is kept in school and put on display for a period of time. After display, the letters are kept in a special folder.
Attendance Awards
Attendance is rewarded both termly and annually. Each term children achieving 98%, 99% or 100% attendance receive bronze, silver and gold certificates respectively. In addition at the end of the year, children who have achieved 100% attendance for the year receive a special 100% badge.
Stickers and other class rewards
All staff in school use a variety of stickers to reward children for work, attitude or behaviour. Stickers are used at the discretion of each member of staff and are an additional motivating reward for children they can proudly display on their jumper for all to see! In addition, staff may use a range of other rewards such as marbles in a jar or mini certificates. Speak to your child’s teacher if you would like to know more.
Carrot Tokens
Each class can earn carrot tokens weekly and the class with the most tokens is chosen to look after Fudge our school rabbit for the following week. Children can earn a token for bringing their PE bag all week, another token for being on time all week, a third for having no warnings all week and a further token for being at school all week. Dinnerladies also award a carrot token each day to their class if they have a good lunchtime and line up properly. Finally, a staff member can award an individual or class a carrot token for other achievements—unless it is their own class!
Targets
Each child has an individual target set to help them improve their work. When they have achieved their target three times, their name is entered into the target booklet displayed in the entrance hall and read out in celebration assembly that week. Once their name is read out, they receive a special target certificate to take home and share with their family and a new target is set. We expect children to achieve these targets within a short space of time and to make it manageable for staff and parents we do not send invitations on this occasion.
Moving up a colour band reading level
Each time children move up to the next coloured band reading level they will receive a certificate from the class teacher.
A Final Note...
Please remember that our policy is to celebrate and reward personal effort and achievement. The staff will always consider and be looking to recognise individual achievement and effort fairly. This does not mean that all children are rewarded in the same way for the same reason as they all have different strengths and talents. What may be easy for one child proves particularly challenging for another and at times the level of effort and hard work involved may not be immediately obvious. As a school we recognise the importance of celebrating each others’ achievements as well as our own and are always proud of and positive about these.
